Older Drivers
A letter was sent to The Times in response to several letters dealing with Older Drivers rights to keep driving. My 87 year old neighbour, still smarting from the published accusations that over-70 drivers represent the greatest road risks, was rapidly overtaken and cut up yesterday by a car full of young people. He blasted his horn but was surprised to see them turn round, laugh and wave.

It was then he noticed the sign on the back of the car which read “Honk if you had it last night"

A brief run down on my experience doing my advanced training

When I first started doing the training with my observer I though that it was going to slow my riding down and then I gradually realised that due to my Observer'Adrian's instruction I was actually getting faster riding in the lanes than I had ever been before. I noticed that my whole approach to riding was different smoother and much safer than before.
We had some good times out riding, I really enjoyed the observed rides and always looked forward to the next session. After my 1st pre test ride assesment which I failed (my fault , silly mistake, nerves got the better of me), the next observed ride was not brilliant at first but Adrian pulled me over and we had a chat about how thefailed pre test assesment had knocked my confidence a bit. He then took the lead having told me to follow him for a while - within a couple of miles I felt my confidence coming back again by following his lines and soon felt that I was riding to standard again. He waved me passed and we continued the ride in much better form. My observed rides were sometimes in goodweather and sometimes bad - one day when we stopped for a coffee we were not sure whether to ride home or get some paddles, we both thought we must be mad but we had a great time regardless and such experiences have improved my riding skills greatly. I would recommend anybody to do the advanced course, it is the best thing I have done to improve my riding and would like to say a big thank you to Adrian, my CVAM Observer, as he made the whole experience so enjoyable. I hope to progress my riding further and in time become an observer myself. Richard Reeves (CVAM)
